  • What types of field trips are available?
    We offer several different field trips to local geologic sites in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The locations change every year so check out our Field Trip page for a list of currently available field trips or contact the museum staff to obtain a list of future field trip sites.
  • How far in advance should I register for the field trip?
    Registration opens approximately 2-3 months prior to the field trip dates. We suggest you register as soon as possible since some field trips fill up fast. Registration will remain open until 3 days before the scheduled trip. Please contact the museum staff for availability if you would like to register within one week of the scheduled trip.
  • How do I register for the field trips?
    Fill out our online Field Trip Registration Form and someone from the RUGM staff will contact you shortly after it is received.
  • What is the cost for the field trips?
    All field trips cost $15 for each non-member adult, $10 for each adult member and $8 for each child under the age of 18.
  • When is payment due for the field trips?
    Payment is due immediately after receipt of field trip registration. Your field trip slots will not be confirmed until payment is received. All payment must be mailed or delivered to the museum in the form of cash or check or credit card information can be taken over the phone.
  • How can I pay for the field trips?
    The museum accepts credit cards, cash, or checks made out to "Rutgers Geology Museum."
  • What age group are the field trips appropriate for?
    Ages 5 and over. Many of our trips may not be suitable for children younger than 5 years old. Please contact the museum for more information if you have further questions.
    Field trips do require some extended walking, so it is recommended that participants should be able to walk at least a mile on a moderate incline.
  • How long are the field trips?
    All of the field trips are about 3 hours in length between the hours of 11 am and 2 pm on the scheduled date.
  • How do I get to the field trip location?
    All participants must provide their own transportation. The RUGM staff will provide an address and directions to the starting location.
  • Can I bring my car to the field trip?
    Yes. All participants must provide their own transportation to the field trip locations. Parking is available at all sites.
  • What do I need to bring on the field trip?
    The RUGM staff will provide a list of items you should bring on the day of the trip after payment is received. The following items are some of the suggested items you should bring with you.
    • Packed lunch and water
    • Sturdy walking shoes
    • Change of clothes
    • Hat, sunglasses and sunblock
    • Bug spray
  • Are there any physical limitations for these field trips?
    Field trips do require some extended walking, so it is recommended that participants should be able to walk at least a mile on a moderate incline.
  • Are there any facilities or stores nearby the field trip locations?
    Some places have bathrooms and stores nearby. However we suggest that everyone bring a packed lunch and bottled water with them on the day of the field trip.
  • Are minors allowed on the field trips?
    Yes, but they must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Unaccompanied minors are not allowed. Field trips are not recommended for children under 5.
  • What happens if I have to cancel?
    If you cancel before final confirmation is sent we will return payment, etc. to you. If you cancel after final confirmation is sent we will offer you a field trip credit and allow you to use this credit to register for any future field trip. No field trip credits will be granted to no-shows.
  • What happens if there is inclement weather?
    The RUGM staff will notify you by phone or email in the event of inclement weather. Every effort will be made to reschedule the field trip for another day. If you are unable to attend the rescheduled date, you will be issued a field trip credit for any future trip.
